Experience Kangaroo Island at night

Alkirna means 'evening' in the tribal language of the Alyawarra people who lived north east of Alice Springs.

Venture out with a naturalist guide to experience a very different kind of 'nightlife'. The sights and sounds of Kangaroo Island after dark.

You experience .....
  • wildlife rarely seen in daylight
  • a visit to a Little Penguin Colony
  • Tammar Wallabies, Brush-tailed Possums, Western Grey Kangaroos, with the possibility of other more elusive night creatures such as Boobook owls, Stone Curlews or even an Echidna
  • the Southern skies. On a clear night the view through our unpolluted atmosphere is breathtaking
  • the sounds of the bush at night
We arrange .....
  • an enthusiastic local guide
  • a comfortable vehicle, with a maximum of 12 passengers, which will pick you up from your accommodation in American River.
  • pick up from the American River General Store at a pre-determined time for those staying elsewhere
What to bring .....
  • comfortable walking shoes, as some walking is involved
  • long trousers and a jacket, as the night air can be cool
  • binoculars are an advantage on clear nights for star-gazing
  • a camera with high speed film. Flash photography disturbs our wildlife and is therefore inappropriate
